My teaching begins with commitment; whether to the instrument, to the ensemble, or to ourselves. I ask students to show up prepared, curious, and willing to work. I believe in developing fundamentals and musicianship side-by-side. Strong fundamentals are what makes musicianship possible, and strong musicianship facilitates the growth of stronger fundamentals. I care deeply about how students play, but also how they listen, react, and contribute. I am also passionate about community. As a studio, we succeed together, and we learn from one another. My goal is to help students build habits and confidence that turn them into thoughtful musicians and responsible members of any musical group and their community.
Lesson Structure
All lessons will be held at the home of the student. Lessons will occur during a scheduled weekly time and will be tailored to meet the needs of my student's musical and personal growth. I will work with the student on short and long-term goals, general music skills, and efficient practice habits, and more as needed. Common focuses include All-District/State auditions, Solo and Ensemble preparation, college auditions, general fundamentals, etc.
The Studio
I am passionate about a studio that is a positive, supportive, and collaborative environment, where students can be involved with and support one another through listening, playing, and building community. In addition to lessons, there will be additional opportunities for growth through at least two studio masterclasses per year, mock auditions/performances, and studio recitals throughout the year. All additional opportunities will be for the entire studio and will be scheduled/announced at least one month in advance.
Scheduling
Lessons will normally be scheduled for the same time each week for the course of the academic year. My lesson schedule will follow the academic calendar, so please make note of any school holidays, breaks, etc. The schedule for the month or year (as preferred by the parent/student) will be worked out a month ahead of time, and will be communicated through my email, mitch.w.brady@gmail.com.
Cancellations/Tardiness
Students must cancel lessons by phone or email with at least 24 hours' notice. If I receive notice in time, a make-up lesson will be scheduled before the end of the month. Cancellations or no-shows without sufficient notice generally cannot be made up and will still be charged the lesson rate. This policy protects the time I set aside for each student and allows me to offer consistent and reliable scheduling for everyone. I always aim to be fair and understanding, and we can discuss special circumstances as they arise. If I am sick or unable to attend a lesson, a make-up will be scheduled before the end of the month, or that lesson charge will be refunded.
Required Materials
Generally, I will provide the necessary music materials required for lessons (method books, solos, warm-up packets, etc.) but there are some materials that I may recommend the student purchase separately. The materials which are required that I will not provide are:
Instrument, mouthpiece, pencil, valve oil/slide grease
Practice Log
Metronome/Tuner (I recommend the Tonal Energy application, if using an electronic device)
Practice Expectations
Below is a recommended practice schedule for students:
Beginner students: 30 minutes per day
Intermediate students: 30-60 minutes per day
Advanced students: 60-90 minutes per day
Daily practice keeps skills from slipping and makes progress smoother. Consistency with practice makes growth feel natural instead of difficult.
All students and parents interested in enrolling will be given all of this information and other pertinent policies via the studio syllabus.
Lesson Fees
The first lesson with me is 30 minutes and is free. After the first lesson, my rates for lessons are as follows:
$45 for 30 minutes
$80 for 60 minutes - standard lesson length
Payment
Payment is due at the first lesson of the month for the entire month of lessons scheduled and will be paid via Venmo or Zelle. This structure helps me reserve lesson times for the entire month in advance and prevents last-minute cancellations. I will send an invoice via email for the scheduled lessons for the month before the first of the month. The lesson rates and payment schedule is flexible in special cases. I will always aim to work out a payment schedule that works for you. If there are any special circumstances you wish to discuss, please feel free to contact me.
